Stigma and Cricket : Part 1

Stigma and Cricket : Part 1

Cricket in November is synonymous with the traditional curtain raiser in Australian summer : The Brisbane test match. The venue is famously known as the “Gabba”. As I was anticipating the Aussie cricket team announcement for the test against Pakistan, the name of Will Pucovski was making headlines in apossible inclusion for the opening test. Will had made his List A debut when the Greenshirts toured here in 2016.He was named in last season’s test team to face Sri Lanka but hadn’t played. Then Thursday’s news broke out that Will is not named in the squad. He asked not to be considered as he wished to take a break due to mental health issues. He became the third Australian this season after Nic Maddinson and Glenn Maxwell to take a break.

The stigma of mental health in cricket is ripe and although cricketing nations like Australia, New Zealand and England are providing support and managing this, it still seems unchartered territory in  many developing nations.Earlier this week, in Indore where India was hosting Bangladesh, the host skipper Virat Kohli spoke how he felt during the poor England summer he endured in 2014. ” I just didn’t know what to do , what to say to anyone, how to speak , how to communicate”.In cricketing terms can be labelled as  going through a “ bad patch” and brushed aside. In psychiatric terms it is tip of an iceberg actually from something that would be labelled an “adjustment disorder “ to something  more severe with time progression which could lead to a depressive episode.Left untreated, it would result in serious complications. Many cricketers would act like Virat did, and won’t communicate about it for it will be perceived as something of a taboo in cricketing circles as well as society. There is minimal support in Asian cultures for someone going through a “bad patch”.Many would turn to family for support. For others,it might end up in a visit to “quacks”.

The most famous case in Pakistan sport of mental health problems was Imran Khan’s depressive episode in 1983-84. In December 1982 in the much hyped series of India s tour of Pakistan, he woke up in pain on the second day of the now much famed second test at Karachi. He started experiencing pain in his left shin which became an intermittent issue throughout that series. He didn’t know but had suffered a stress fracture which was misdiagnosed and continued to bowl.Around his physical ailments, there were well documented issues of rows with board over captaincy and on selection of players to be picked. Fanatical sections of press hated him as captain. He was booed relentlessly  in February in Karachi 1983 despite visibly limping after taking five wickets in the final test which was a dead rubber and claiming man of the series (his career best 40 wickets haul in series ).This was in the aftermath of what happened in Niaz stadium in Hyderabad ,the fourth test of the series.Javed Miandad wasn’t allowed to go for then Sir Gary Sobers’ record of 365 stranded at 280* in an innings of 581/3 declared with loads of time to play.

Much worse to ensue.Though it was his best series at the peak of his career,he had to stop bowling otherwise risk ending his career. He played the 1983 world cup solely as a batsman but flared up the fracture in Melbourne’s Boxing day test that year where he scored a match saving 72*. Eventually,he needed surgery in April 1984 but post surgery went into a full blown depressive episode neglectful of watching any cricket or reading about it or even stepping outside his London flat. He ruminated the end of his career and his future. This was even before news came of his mum being diagnosed of terminally being ill with cancer. He kept exercising though, possibly the only thing that worked more stronger than any anti depressant would do.

Gauging on the fluctuations in a cricketer‘s career, it is no surprise that suicides in cricket are more than any other sport.Loss of a role, a fall from glory and limelight, poor coping mechanisms (drugs and alcohol use) and financial stressors take their toll. The factors can be innumerable.Albert Trott,Arthur Shrewsbury,Albert Reif, the great Sidney Barnes, David Bairstow and Peter Roebuck are all historical victims of suicide. The “Judge “ Robin Smith under influence of alcohol contemplated taking his own life only saved only by witnessing a suicide where he resided in Perth, in an open disclosure ahead of his book launch during this year’s World Cup.

When news broke out about Will Pucovski stating he wanted to take a break, my mind twitched. He is only 21.The media and Australian team all backed him. The same day an 18 year old Rohail Nazir, Pakistan’s newest talent and the under 19 skipper scored a 50 in an Emerging Teams Asia cup encounter against Afghanistan. He has starred on the under 19 scene with the bat in Sri Lankan and South African tours.Skippering the under 19 world cup and expected to be valuable draft induction next month for the PSL,a bright season awaits. Although physically he will be able to cope with rigours but will he be able to any access mental health support if he requires?

For that matter ,will any of the senior or junior squad members be able to? What will they say ? What will they do? How will they communicate? These questions continue to loom in the wake of recent events down under regarding mental health and well being with many answers still undetermined.

   (To be continued)

Premiership opener !

Premiership opener !

For many football fans,August couldn’t come soon enough. Its not even three months since the last ball was kicked in Premiership. It’s been even lesser if you consider both the Europa and Champions league Trophy final was contested by premiership teams. With off season trophies that included Copa America and African League of Nations being played, many players would still be recovering.

Yet with transfer deadline all wrapped before the opening kickoffs for the second season in a row and fantasy drafts all set,it’s ideal for the football to get going.

Last year’s crunch finish had led to a renewed interest again.Liverpool buoyed by their champions trophy win kicked off proceedings on Friday night with a thumping win against newcomers Norwich. Divock Origi, Mohammad Salah and last season’s league player of the season Virgil van Dijk killed off the game inside 42 minutes ensuring a 4-0 Reds’ lead.Their squad is solid, especially that  in form quartet of forwards  and undoubtedly will giving the champions,Manchester City a good run .

Manchester City on the other hand had been building in their strengths and are looking for the three peat.West Ham seemed like pebbles in their path as they began Saturday lunch time with a boosting win.VAR or not, they crushed the opposition again 5-0.Raheem Sterling started where he left off last season in a game which Sergio Aguero started on the bench.

Champions league runners up, Tottenham Hotspur had the teatime kick off against the newly promoted Aston Villa who took the lead against the Champions league runners up inside ten minutes.Tyrone Mings assisted on a John McGinn strike to stun the home crowd at Spurs’ new stadium. The visitors gave Spurs a good outing securing the lead for over an hour till but succumbing to debutant Tanguy Ndombele’s and late Harry Kane goals losing 3-1.

Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s Manchester United didn’t have much of transfer frenzy off season.Having a dismal end of season run that landed them in sixth, they had the prized tie of the round hosting Chelsea. The ones that they did manage to sign  had a stellar debut.Aaron Won Bissaka played well with Daniel James scoring on  debut their fourth in a 4-0 demolition.Marcus Rashford scored twice.Frank Lampard the newly appointed coach of the Blues had it tough going in his first Premiership game as a coach.

Europa League runners up,Arsenal gingerly started their campaign up north. Their defence came through managed to keep a clean sheet thanks to Bernd Leno. The Gunners got the points with the help of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyeng’s second half finish.Steve Bruce marked his Newcastle managerial debut with a loss.

Elsewhere,Burnley with Ashley Barnes brace against Southampton won 3-0. There were goal less draws for Leicester against Wolves and  Everton against Crystal Palace whilst newly promoted Sheffield United who gave seven premiership debuts salvaged an 88th minute draw at  Bournemouth via Billy Sharp. That wasn’t a surprise considering the Blades have beaten the cherries in last seven out of eight clashes.

Amongst other premiership players marking their debut and scoring is Neal Maupay. The Frenchman, obtained from Brentford, started his five year contract coming in as second half substitute, scored the third of Brighton’s goals in a thumping away start at Watford. Can’t ask for a brighter start for the sea gulls.

It was a scattered start in terms of kick off times but there certainly were plenty of goals to savour in the opening weekend.Titles aren’t decided in August but the thrills and spills have to start somewhere as teams will soon start to wipe away that rust and oil up their tanks. After all even with the February break, it will be a pretty long season heading up to the Euros next year.Bring it On !

Ashes Opener

Ashes Opener

There’s no better way to start the world test championship with the most watched and exciting test series there is currently, The Ashes. England versus Australia. Edgbaston,Birmingham set the scene for the latest series which started with less than three weeks after England claimed their first World Cup.There is no time to relax .The Hollies stand was in full voice on the first morning.

Back came all three culprits of the “sandpaper” crisis for Australia.Whilst Cameron Bancroft and David Warner had more forgettable comebacks, the ex-skipper was on a total different platform.Steven Smith known as “Smudge” has always thrived in the test format.Long gone are the days when he started at no 8 spot as a leg spinner.

His eye is amazing on the ball.He has so much time and can manoeuvre the ball easily to any part.Unconventional and ritualistic is his style. The ability he has to play almost every ball making sure it doesn’t hit his pad shows the advantage he has with being so fidgety. He would have all day to come outside off and nudge it across the leg sides. He whipped and dragged his way to a pair of 140’s in this test.It was breath taking and game changing.

Smith in both innings simply took the game away.Australia were teetering at 122/8 on day one but managed 284 largely thanks to him. With scores level in the third, Smith and Matthew Wade combined to set the game adrift. Both scored tons en route a mammoth second innings score of 487! Steve Smith now has 25 tons as he became the fifth Aussie to score a ton in each innings of an Ashes test.

Ashes 2019 - First Test - England v Australia

Earlier on,England took a lead of 90 on first innings. Whilst Rory Burns trawled through his maiden 100 to keep England competing, Australia came back on the third day taking wickets before the long Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes’ vigil that provided the hosts with that lead.Joe Root scored 57.

The target to win was 398.It looked immense, especially for a final day pitch which was low, slow and taking spin.Enter, Nathan Lyon aka Gary. He was sublime in the turning track and added to his tally which stands now at 352 wickets. He went through England like a raging bull in a ring. The hosts had no chance and succumbed at 146. It was a 251 run loss and the end to the Aussie losing streak at Edgbaston since 2001.

One thing that the Ashes doesn’t need is poor umpiring. After the World Cup issues, surely the elite panel has to improve in the quality of umpiring. Both Joel Wilson and Aleem Dar had horrible performances. Even with the DRS, it wasn’t a saving grace. The numbers at the back of the player’s shirts are also very irritating.

ashes 4

It’s becoming clear that Aussies will be in position of strength if the wickets continue like this ….slow flat tracks which offer minimal movement. England will struggle if the Dukes ball doesn’t do much minus day one. In Matthew Wade Aussies have a strong number 6 and although Bancroft is back in the team there is scope for Marcus Harris to come back .Otherwise I won’t expect any changes at Lord’s .

England on the other hand lost not only the game but Jimmy Anderson after four overs. That itself was the cost of this game. Even though Jofra Archer is in form  a possible replacement  in the line up, it will be  his first test only. Their inability to play spin will also be daunting for them in chases whilst Moeen Ali is clearly struggling both with bat and ball.

Ashes cricket is superb and entertaining though, and expect plenty more thrills in this five test series. For now, its full steam ahead to Lord’s and the home of the cricket.

Reflections of the Cup: Part 2

Reflections of the Cup: Part 2

July 14, 2019.The overnight rain at the home of cricket couldn’t dampen the spirits of millions tuning in to this super Sunday of sport. Alongside the Wimbledon final and the British GP at Silverstone , cricket was competing on terrestrial TV since the Ashes in 2005.England and New Zealand  had different paths toward the world cup finale but they were competing for Cricket’s top prize.

cwc final

New Zealand had shocked a billion people in a rain interrupted 2 day semifinal at Manchester. After a slowish start, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor were the pillars behind their 239. Kane with a calculated 67 and Taylor a  measured 74. At the first day’s close , they were being scrutinised for their scoring rate, but what eventually transpired laid truth to the fact it wasn’t an easy pitch at all.

Matt Henry took the Indian top order apart and 5/3, were reeling. M S Dhoni and Ravendra Jadeja put an almost match winning stand of 116 until Jadeja had one top edged to the kiwi skipper. Dhoni’s run out ended Indian hopes in this cup. They had finished top of the group table in standings. Rohit Sharma top scored in the cup with 648 runs.Kiwis now were Lord’s bound.

nzl vs ind semi

England ,the pre tournament favourites, had their cup fortunes dwindling once they had lost back to back to Sri Lanka at Headingley and Aussies at Lord’s. Now they had a chance at payback against the old enemy playing at their fortress Edgbaston. Aussies had never lost a semi till then but hadn’t won in Birmingham since 2001. Something had to give. England had a great start with Aussies losing their skipper, Aaron Finch early.Steven Smith ‘s 85 and Alex Carey ,who is one of the finds of the tourney, with a 46 put some resistance to the Aussie total of 225 .Chris Woakes was the leading bowler with 3 wickets.

semi eng

It never looked enough. England’s rejuvenation in the cup was mirrored with Jason Roy’s comeback. At Edgbaston, he killed off the contest with his 85. England blistered through the target with Morgan and root hitting the winning runs.An 8 wicket crushing to sail through the final.Lord’s awaited the hosts after 40 years in one day world cup final.

Lord’s was an equally challenging  pitch and tested Kiwi batting again.Henry Nicholls with a 55 and Tom Latham with a 47 led the way as Kiwis posted a 241. Liam Plunkett and Chris Woakes snared three each.242 on the conditions given looked a good total even with  the glorious  sunshine in the second half.At 86/4, New Zealand were in the ascendency. Ben Stokes and Jos Butler restored the hosts’ hopes with a 110 run stand.Stokes would run out of partners in a thrilling final few overs in an unbeaten 84, as England were all out on the final ball at 241.The match was tied and headed to a Super Over. A first for a final.Amongst the pandemonium, the final over saw a high drama with 4 overthrow runs given following a ricochet from Ben’s bat on the throw for the deep. One could have never  predicted that.

The Super Over was equally befitting of a thriller. England started first with Stokes and Butler putting a 15.Martin Guptill who had a poor world cup and Jimmy Neesham took  to the task.Whilst Guptill was run out on the final throw from Jason Roy with scores again tied at 15, the rules had England declared winners on the number of boundaries hit during the game. What a law.The Trophy had the hosts name for the third cup running. Stokes was undoubtedly the man of the match and seals redemption for  that night in Mumbai in 2016.Finally it comes home.A big salute to the Kiwis who fought valiantly.Kane Williamson took the man of the series, deservedly.

final stokes

So what will this World Cup be remembered for, other than the dramatic world cup finale ? Could it be Rohit’s five centuries ? Would it be Mitchell Starc’s 27 victims ? Would it be the all round display of Shakib ul Hassan with 606 runs and 11 wickets ? Would it be the issues regarding run rate and boundaries deciding standings in group as well as the final ?

It will be for all of the above and much more. The 50 over game was livened up the ICC with some really good pitches set up and allowed the challenge between the bat and ball to thrive. No 400 run belters or dust bowls were allowed. There was some great colour displayed by a lot of fans who travelled from around the world to paint the passion for their respective teams. Whilst there was a huge viewing for the final, the fact Sky allowed Channel 4’s coverage was great boost for the public support of the game in UK.

Could it have been better? Yes. Umpiring standards definitely need to improve particularly some of Kumara  Dharmasena’s decisions in the semi and final.Secondly there needs to be a better resolution of the rain issues that troubled the earlier games. The Super Over rules need also be tightened up for a match that is worthy of final verdict like a second super over.Double Over times are common in Hockey and Basketball so why not cricket ? The 15 man roster for a seven week tournament also looks thin as an extensive run requires more bench strength.

Overall, this World Cup was well hosted and attended in good numbers and had some great thrillers in some fantastic venues. Whether the 50 over game continues or not in the future, the World Cup definitely has a place to stay as it has enriched the sport once again.

Reflections of the Cup : A Fan’s Perspective

Reflections of the Cup : A Fan’s Perspective

2019 was the first time since 1992 in which the Cricket World Cup returned to a league format where all teams played each other before the top 4 went through to the semi-finals.

Unfortunately for Pakistan, there was not a repeat of 1992, but by the end of the group phase opponents were breathing a sigh of relief. Pakistan were growing in stature, confidence and developing the momentum that often makes them look unstoppable in knock-out games.

Most neutral observers felt that Pakistan should have proceeded ahead of New Zealand into 4th spot given the victories over England and New Zealand and the farce of New Zealand playing for run rate in the group game against England.

This had been the best campaign since 1999 in terms of wins against world class teams.

However, the lack of ruthlessness from the selectors ultimately cost the team dear.

The team clearly thought the West Indies pitch would mirror that at the same venue 2 weeks earlier against England. Rather than assess the conditions, the batsmen went gung ho and lost their chance of having a good NRR for the rest of the tournament.

It had been clear that Shoaib Malik had not looked interested in playing for Pakistan for some time. He had averaged 13 in England having played here since 2003. Loyalty to him and Mohammad Hafeez (irrespective of the England game) rather than going for class hungry young acts like Saud Shakeel meant that the message was clear. Individuals and seniority meant more than the team. It was a damning indictment that Malik played ahead of Haris Sohail against England, Australia and India, three of the semi-finalists.

Haris is widely known as a class player who although criticised for making pretty 40-50s, is capable of scoring tough runs under pressure. In retrospect, Pakistan needed him during that Taunton chase to add some calmness to the emotional roller coaster.

Haris

The game against Australia is a perfect snapshot of Pakistani cricket over the past two decades in crunch World Cup matches. They lacked consistent discipline when bowling, dropped catches and despite the comeback led by Amir, failed to pounce when comfortably placed at 136/2 and chasing 307 on a very small ground. It is a damning indictment that Pakistan have not won a crucial match when chasing a tough total in a World Cup since the 1999 semi final (excluding the chase vs Australia in 2011 World Cup). There is a sense of panic that descends into the dressing room when a collapse commences.

There are three things that the PCB need to closely scrutinise: (1) game/tournament awareness (2) ability to manage emotions under pressure which affects ability to execute plans and (3) fitness and attitude.

It is clearly not the ability to bat and bowl that is the issue. It is the lack of mental health support that the players receive unlike their counterparts in Australia, England and New Zealand. The team is at a disadvantage by not having the insight into how mental health input can promote focus, staying calm under pressure, treating pressure situations as the norm and having the consistent belief to execute their abundant skills at all times. This is clearly most evident when playing neighbours India who now have won all seven World Cup encounters against Pakistan dating back to 1992.

The India game links into the attitude and fitness aspects of professionalism. Those present at the game saw the stark difference in fitness levels between the two sides. It was only after the India game that the attitude and body language on the field and behaviour off it improved. Simply put, it is the lack of professionalism that is stopping Pakistan from challenging consistently for honours at the highest level. The players lack the understanding of how to manage their minds and bodies consistently like England, India and Australia.

wasim khan

The concept of sports psychiatry is well-known in the USA and gathering pace in other places. The Pakistan team requires the PCB to ensure mental health support for all domestic players. There is potential in a sports psychiatrist with knowledge of cricket, Pakistani culture and the Pakistani team allowing the team to develop focus, mindfulness, fitness, a positive attitude, discipline in all aspects and importantly, ability to manage difficult situations calmly and foster a closer team spirit. This is the kind of suggestion that the PCB should take on board. Wasim Khan has made a good start by looking at restructuring of domestic cricket and making Balochistan more visible on the domestic map. Addition of sports psychiatrists, nutritionists, dieticians, strategists and baseball throwers for out fielding at all levels would drastically change attitudes and much needed professionalism to the undeniable natural skills that Pakistan have always possessed.

(My thanks to Hassan Mahmood who is based in Birmingham. He was the official fan of  Pakistan’s World Cup campaign recently held in UK .)

Reflections of the Cup : Part 1

Reflections of the Cup : Part 1

July 5, 2019. As the sun started  setting on the home of the Cricket and masses exited the North Gate going toward St. Johns Wood tube station on this July evening, an eerie feeling encompassed both sets of fans wearing Green. Bangladesh had already been knocked out of the world cup but Pakistani fans couldn’t get the full euphoric flavour of the their fourth straight one day win. That for a team who had only a month ago had lost their eleventh out of twelfth this year. They had been knocked out through an inferior run rate to the New Zealand, a rule that won’t take into account the fact Pakistan had beaten the New Zealand  on head to head at Edgbaston 10 days earlier. As one of those thousands that evening, I just like many millions cursed on what could have been, rather than the journey home. “Ah, where did it all go wrong ?”

The easiest answer would be their world cup opener. After all, at Trent Bridge they only managed 105 against the West Indies, only to be chased down in 14 overs. It destroyed their run rate , something they couldn’t overcome in their five world cup wins. For the record, West Indies  won’t win another match until their last game. Massive downer.

The Greenshirts stayed at Trent Bridge to pull a shock in three day’s time. They held out the  hosts and the No.1 ranked squad, England at the time in a high scoring scorcher by 14 runs, reviving their hopes again.Root and Butler scored tons in vain and Mohammad Hafeez who was dropped earlier goes on to make 84, aided by Babar Azam’s 63.Wahab Riaz marked a return to form with some late reverse swing blocking the English tail.

It was a cup marked with turbulent weather with several games being washed out.The next Trent Bridge encounter between Black Caps and India and Pakistan’s against Sri Lanka in Bristol was huge, a 4 pointer effectively that provided all teams with a point but in the broader context would make it more challenging  for the Greenshirts as they lost valuable ground ahead of their next two huge encounters. Both Australian and the India games would be ones to forget for them.

In Taunton , under grey cloud cover and without their ace leg spinner, Pakistan opted to bowl first. This invited  Finch and Warner to blaze through with Warner ‘s first 100 of this world cup.Though the bowlers held the late order to just 30 runs off the last 6 wkts, with Mohammad Amir starring, 308 always looked a herculean task. This would especially hurt after being 136/2 at one stage.Imam ul Haq’s run out and the start of  Hafeez giving wickets to part timers, Aaron Finch on this occasion, was very wounding. Shoaib Malik won’t trouble the scorers on back to back occasions and from then Pakistan would always be chasing the game; 41 short in the chase despite Wahab’s late lusty hitting keeping them within a distance.

Reflect1

The Humdinger at Manchester on June 16 was always hyped up to unlimited proportions.Rain was expected. However clearly knowing there were gulfs between the squads, another inviting toss meant India went to a flyer with 136. Pakistan and Hassan Ali especially looked severely off colour.Set up a massive 337 built around Rohit Sharma’s 140, there was some fight shown by Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman but the fall of that wicket at 117 was the beginning of the end.Hafeez would go to Hardik Pandya on this occasion and Malik ended his one day career with a golden duck, ending any resistance. The rain only muddied the margins to an 89 run D/L loss, although it felt much more. Many supporters from either side failed to stay until the last ball  was delivered. Such an anti climax. Essentially they will need to win all their remaining games for any chance.

It only could have gotten better after that defeat, as it does. Enter Lord’s which has been quite lucky for the Greenshirts and back comes Haris Sohail for the depleted Malik. That 59 ball 89 was a booster badly needed. It projected them to 308.The Proteas who had a miserable world cup run just couldn’t come close and ended 49 short as Wahab and Shadab shared six wickets. Were they back ?

If any game in the Cup was going to define their progression,Edgbaston was the catalyst.Pumped up by one of the most partisan Greenshirt crowds  in the eyes of many analysts such like Michael Vaughan and Steve Wilson, they showed up in numbers all through out the tournament  but especially here, which spoke volumes of their passion, considering the back to back losses.pak fans edge

On the field,a 19 yr old Shaheen came to the forefront taking apart the Kiwis top order.Jimmy Neesham’s 97 would push Kiwis to a  more respectable 237.The ball would  turn square especially in the afternoon. In the chase,it was a defining innings for Babar Azam who capped his world cup record tally with an unbeaten 101.The lad from Gulberg had finally arrived.

reflect2

Beating Kiwis was  a huge morale booster. The Afghans who had lost all their games in the cup by now  though would not bow down easily and though scored a paltry 227 at Headingley. Even that was generous it seemed because Greenshirts made a meal of it, in the quest of run rate improvement. Chasing at 72/1 the spin started taking effect. Muhammad Nabi created havoc for the middle order alongside Mujeeb ur Rahman. However with Gulbadin Naib in disarray bringing himself to bowl in death, Imad and the tail survived a hostile finish to scrape by 3 wickets. The volatility transpired in the stands into ugly scenes from the Afghan fans who couldn’t manage this particular loss to their neighbouring rivals.

Coming to Lords again, was very reassuring for their final game versus Bangladesh. However the pre-match  calculations had them aiming for an unthinkable number, plus  batting first to have any chance of progression. In the end Imam reached 3 figures, however Greenshirts managed only 315.The response was cut down sharply by Shaheen’s record haul of 6-35,capping his 16 wkts. It was a convincing win but Greenshirts despite winning were heading out.

shaheen 3

What were the bright spots ? Certainly, Babar Azam led the way. Haris Sohail followed suit. Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz, who both looked unlikely to make the final cut bowled very well. Shaheen Afridi who only played the U19 World Cup a year back , broke in with a 16 wicket haul. Imad was limited but useful. Imam ul Haq was the second highest team scorer. But the bottom line was they didn’t progress and there was no doubt, that was the biggest disappointment for their passionate fans who persevered through thick and thin to push them in all their games.

Where was the Sarfaraz, the skipper in all this ? Well other than munching on Archies’ burger ahead of the mega clash and yawning , he scored a 55 versus England and took that fine Ross Taylor catch. His batting number was much under scrutiny as he wouldn’t bat up  top and the toss decisions were poor at times. Some of the squad selections could have definitely been better. There were many cons in this squad.

With a truncated squad of 15 allowed according to rules, Mohammad Hasnain couldn’t get a single game in the tourney. Shoaib Malik’s total scores of eight runs in three innings was utter indignation. Mohammad Hafeez gifting wickets to part timers in 4 straight games ,appalling. Fakhar Zaman looked a shadow of the cricketer he was in 2017 as was Shadab Khan. Only two openers picked for a long tournament. Hassan Ali…. well let’s not even talk about his presence or the lack of.

I didn’t expect at the outset that they would be in top four. However, they played much better than expected and despite the selection blunders, poor preparation and team management for the game in Manchester as well as the crucial element of fielding, they almost came within a  whisker. So close yet so far. It definitely showed from the three losses that mentally they were bogged out of the games in key moments and that is an area worth investing time and resources for the future. Not only do they need to learn this from more settled squads that provide that mental support, but they will need to de stigmatise as well. Not everything can be like 1992, after all.

Is it the end of the Red Monster ?

Is it the end of the Red Monster ?

Semifinals can be one of the most difficult and entertaining games in any sport. Whether its the Fifa World Cup, the Conference Finals in NBA or any of tennis’ grand slams, they have an air of exuberance about them.Such games can also be defining moment in one’s  journey towards an elusive title or even at times signalling the end of a career.

Rafael Nadal’s career is filled with exultation, euphoria and vigour.Anything less would not be Rafa by definition. His hold on being the best  player on clay  is unchallengeable in any court.11 French opens are more than enough to lay that claim.Even if he had 9(one more than Max Degucis),he would been crowned the King. However, with his zest and honours, comes a track of injuries he has suffered over the years and a price to pay on arguably the most difficult surface in tennis to play on.

To dismiss Rafa on clay early in the season would be to say that Brazil won’t ever win another Fifa World Cup.As long he has entered the Stade Roland Garros, he will be in the reckoning, no matter what the field is.But the field will be stronger.Roger Federer plays for the 1st time in four years in Paris and Novak Djokovic is much stronger than  a year ago when he lost to Marco Cecchinato in the quarters as a 20th seed in Paris.20th seed ? He is World no 1 now having won all the three slams since that loss. Dominic Thiem also is proving a strong contender.

Having said Rafa still has the edge on clay. His early clay court season form though has had dents in it already. In Monte Carlo, he was upset by the eventual winner Fabio Fognini ending his 18 match streak at the tourney.Barcelona was next where he again was a 3 time defending champion. He met Dominic Thiem in a semi and lost in straight sets.He entered Madrid Masters  as the no. 2 seed and having won here 2 years ago, was a strong favourite.

Under the floodlights of the Manolo Santana stadium court,he had lost no more than seven games in a contest leading up to the semi finals. That is,till he played the “Next Gen” star, Stefanos Tsitsipas.Stefanos only won 6 games against Rafa in their grand slam encounter in the Australian Open in an embarassing semi defeat for the 20 yr old at the Rod Laver Arena.Madrid though was different and Stefanos was a different contender. His array of ground strokes and youthful brilliance conquered the first set and pushed Rafa to bring his best on clay in set no 2.

Rafa obliged having won 4 straight to end the second set and draw level. However, in the decider, the Greek star held his nerve countering break points on his own to force the advantage and break for a 3-2 lead and then another  for a 5-2 cushion and settle the tie.Rafa ousted from another Masters tourney on clay in 2019 and remains win less on clay  with Rome and Paris in waiting .He hasn’t made it to a final on the surface yet either. Are we seeing chinks in the armour now ?Oh well, clay does produce a fair share of upsets.

Could it be accumulating fatigue ?Could the injuries have been taking its toll ?Could the opposition on clay have got stronger in 2019? Too early to tell but there might be hints in each factor. He has 57 clay court titles so far, something which might not be broken in a long long time but is that the final number ?Or a blip ?Rafa has come back too many times to make that number static.

In the context of the 2019 season, Rafa hasn’t won a title yet.Incidentally his last win came against Tsitsipas was on Toronto’s hard courts.Surprise, surprise,he is the defending champion in both Rome and at Roland Garros, so will have to defend a lot of ranking points.Though that might be the least of his worries. This could be a keenly contested three weeks of clay court tennis(Italian and French Open) for years. We might just have to wait still till the chequered flag can be raised for an end of the road to Monstruo Rojo (Red Monster).

The Cup The World Wants !

The Cup The World Wants !

Since it inception, only eight teams have ever won the Fifa World Cup inclusive of the original Jules Rimet Trophy that began in 1930.There have been 21 editions and come Thursday the jouney to the 22 nd one begins in Russia.

Seven games of which four are knock out ones for the victor test the sheer physical strength, depth, mental toughness and resilience  to the maximum amongst the global stage with billions watching. Its not an easy task and only one mighty team will be  kept standing in the end. These are my final four to make semis.

So who are the favourites ? Surprise surprise , the list is by no means a novel one.Defending champions Germany are the  no.1 ranked team in the world according to the latest Fifa  rankings and they have a boastful record when it comes to the  FIFA World Cup finals. Champions on four occasions, they are almost in every World Cup pundit’s list to win it all.

The last time they were knocked before entering the knock out stage was 1978. Joachim Louw has had the luxury of a huge talent pool  at his display again with Marco Reus and Manuel Neuer ‘s availability in premiere tournament finally. Joshua Kimmich and Mats Hummels are ever reliable alongside the shooting prowess of Thomas Muller and Timo Werner. Muller is only six shy of Miroslav Klose s all time record of sixteen goals set in Brazil four years ago. I do think they will miss Leroy Sane though, the English Premiership ‘s young player of the year who has been an important weapon in Manchester City’s strong league championship run.

The team which needs no introduction to FIFA World Cup finals is Brazil. They are the betting favourites come the opening kickoff and have made it to every tournament since the World Cup ever began.Rejuvenated under the coaching skills of Tite, the likes of Neymar, Coutinho, Firminho, Gabriel Jesus, Paulinho, Willian, Casemiro and Fernandinho are destined to perform well barring any major injury such as the one Neymar suffered when they hosted four years ago.Their attack might be the best with notable  household names but its their watertight defence which is sparking the debate on them sealing a sixth World Cup.The Canarinho will fly high in Russia.

In 2010, Spain won the World Cup for the first time sandwiched in between their two Euro wins. For years they have dominated on the world level courtesy of their huge domestic league attracting star players and a wealth of youth talent blossoming in it . Real Madrid completing a three peat of the the Champions League last month provide the bulk of the Spanish national team this year  but there are others in the mix.David de Gea is amongst the top goal keepers in the world let alone the English premier league and Diego Costa alongside David Silva prove that it’s not a Real – Barca showcase for the La Roja. They have sacked their coach Julen Lopetugui  on the eve of the tourney soon after his appointment for Real Madrid. That is poor timing indeed considering he was undefeated in his reign and comes as a mini crisis. Spain still will have the depth to launch into the last four.

France were knocked off by Germany in Brazil at the quarter final stage however two years later they exacted revenge in the Euros although losing at home to Portugal in the final. In recent years they have definitely improved on their talent and star European players such as Antoine Griezmann and Paul Pogba . They have new talent at the world stage as well with Nabil Fekir, Ousmoane Dembele, Ngolo Kante and Kylian Mbappe and Thomas Lamar. This will be a tough French squad although replicating 1998’s World Cup success is home will still require a bit more for Didier Deschamps ‘s “Le Blues “.

Those are my locks for the semis. Its not a World Cup if  Argentina are not included in the top picks to win and by no means they are “dark horses” yet but still they are not a polished squad having struggled to qualify.Come Cup time, they are a different kettle of fish. Lionel Messi continues his quest for a cup win having won the  “Golden Ball”  last time and coming ever so close to glory. Not having Italy and Holland makes it slightly  easier to predict this time around although their absence will surely be felt around world cup circles by their millions of die hard fans.

So on July 15 , there will be a victor. It might not be a new one ! Who will hold the Fifa World Cup in Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium. We are far from finding it as of now as the cup is ready to become underway but there is a  good hunch that one of the biggies will have enough bottle to nail it.  Its a cup that the world wants but only a few can hold it, still !

Un Decima !

Un Decima !

September 2007.The US open final at Flushing Meadows,New York.Roger Federer beats Novak Djokovic. It capped an 11th consecutive grand slam won by either by himself or Rafael Nadal since Roland Garros 2005, Rafa’s maiden slam.A domination that was never to be witnessed again … or will it ?

Since January 2017, the “FEDAL” have been at it again.Turning back the time,Federer had wins in Melbourne and Wimbledon and Nadal triumphed in Paris and New York. They have re-ignited tennis nostalgia as the veterans have been unmatchable.Heading into this year’s Roland Garros, one would have easily said it’s Rafa ‘s turn… Really ? 7 matches over a fortnight where the surface is bouncy and relentless is not an  easy run.

Having said that if the clay in Paris is a bull, that no matador can come close to tame it as the spaniard from Mallorca can.He hardly got a sniff of any issues in the first four matches before coming up against Diego Schwartzman in the quarters.Rain came to his rescue as he lost the first set,and  two points adrift of levelling. Luck on his side, maybe. The next day it was back to routine as he brushed off the challenge in four sets.

Speaking of challengers, Federer took his usual clay court sabbatical to get ready for the grass.Alexander Zverev was punished with 15 sets between rounds 2-4,reaching his quarters where Dominic Thiem got the better of him in four sets. The shock of the tourney came when Novak Djokovic, the 2016 winner, trying to  make another comeback struggling against Marco Cecchinato,an unheralded italian.Cecchinato took a two set lead and in the fourth nailed a riveting tie break to advance to his first ever semi.Juan Martin Del Potro was the fifth seed and he took to the task to take care of Marin Cilic the world no 3  in quarters before bowing out to Rafa in another punch less semi.Thiem knocked over Cecchinato in the other semi to set a date with Rafa.

Dominic Thiem is only one of three individuals to have defeated Nadal  three times on the red clay and he’s done so in the last three years. He idolised Nadal as a youngster growing up on Austrian clay friendly turfs. Now was his chance again. In Madrid, he had Rafa on the ropes early and another quick start would have Rafa in trouble.

The first set was key. Thiem had his chances, but Rafa negotiated it well. He won the first six points of the match and broke early. Despite breaking back,Rafa continued his advantage to break back and keep his cool to take the first set in 58 minutes. He kept his unforced errors low and won a comfortable three fourths of his 1st serve points with a barrage of strokes all over the court resulting in winners.

frenchop1

It was imperative for Thiem to have taken that first set, because barring injury,Rafa is “lights out”come the follow ups.He tried the net but was impervious to passing the spaniard at all there. His serve might have given him some respite but on clay one needs more that that especially against the opponent he was facing.Rafa continued his surge and took care of the next two sets dropping just 5 games. It did take him 5 championship points to seal the deal.It was a foregone conclusion by then.

An 11th French open,a 17th grand slam.It sounds a bit monosyllabic when one sees that he is three behind the GOAT. Despite that, ruling the roost on the red clay of Roland Garros is an astonishing task.He carries on with niggling cramps here and there. It marks the sixth  slam in a row now that”Fedal” have conquered in their renaissance. How far will it continue? Nobody cares for now as its exhilarating for tennis.

Whether Rafa is playing Wimbledon or not is another matter but for now he basks in the glory of the “Uno Decima”.

Headingley : Back To Reality !

Headingley : Back To Reality !

Yorkshire had been waiting and remembering. Not long had the flames died from the Lord’s euphoria that up North, under a  sunny sky at Leeds, Sarfraz Ahmad found himself calling the toss rightly for the first time as a skipper. His confidence in skipper hood must have for split second received a huge boost. It seemed that there was no doubt in his mind to bat ,similar to his counterpart calling at Lord’s.That confidence would have lasted for most part of an hour as the humidity at 11 am onwards and the traditional seam Headingley is famous for lit up many in the English camp who were at the back end of a lot of scrutiny the whole week.

The Greenshirts who always love to bat first regardless of the conditions, courtesy of  lacking a chasing temperament would not have been so disheartened at 49/2 in the opening session. Then with Haris Sohail nicking one to second slip and Asad giving Cook first slip practice, the visitors found themselves at 68/4 at lunch. Both looked to have discovered some form at Lord’s.Worse was to come though.

At 79/7,with another failure from the skipper, it didnt look like 100 was possible. Shadab Khan’s third fifty in as many games with Hasan Ali’s cameo helped Pakistan towards a 174.Many had called it then, the test was done. It took 48.1 overs.Stuart Broad ,Jimmy Anderson and Chris  Woakes,Wood’s replacement racked up three each. The Pakistan batting which had been dreaded pre tour for a dismal score had succumbed.Did someone mention “Mallender” ?

By the time England came to bat,it seemed there wasn’t much assistance left as Cook and  Keaton Jennings set off for unique kind of opening ,not seen recently by the hosts achieving a fifty stand.England ended the day at 106/2, looking set for a lead.Despite rain holding up the first session on day 2,England carried on doggedly. Dominic Bess as a night watchman enjoyed himself on a 49 as they took the lead and built on it. Jos Butler ‘s dropped chance when he was 4  was the big spill of the day as he went on to make an unbeaten 80. Pakistan’s fielding wasn’t too bad but Hasan Ali’s drop was rued for some time. The lead was set at 189. The pitch now had levelled up, playing well for the batters.

headingley 5

I think that doesn’t count for the fact that this is Pakistan’s batting though. If one had slept through the second innings on day three, one would have just gone space through an action replay of what happened in a first, except running at a slightly faster pace.Imam criticised for the poor shot he played in the first innings managed 34 and the debutant Usman Salahuddin played with some caution for a 33.The rest were worth not even mentioning.Still have to see its hard seeing Azhar Ali struggling to plant that front foot post injury.Jimmy took him twice at Leeds.Pakistan scored a paltry 134 in 46 overs, just batting 92.1 in the whole game. The loss was an innings and 55 runs. They had shown no fight at all.

Broad took another three for in the second innings giving Michael Vaughan something to think about before he writes his next piece.Dominic Bess who starred with the bat outperformed Shadab as a spinner’s duel with a three-for of his own and found himself diving all around with the stunner.Even the new kid on the block,Sam Curran, the hosts’s third replacement took a wicket in each innings.England had bounced back and won a test match for the first time since early september last year at Lord’s against a weak Windies squad.A relief for Joe Root.

All that Lord’s euphoria, evaporated.Well ,Headingley has never been Pakistan’s cup of tea.Its their sixth defeat here against England. They haven’t been close to winning since their historic series winner of 1987, batting first or last.Yorkshire’s saturation of fans of Pakistani origin will have to wait another year before they find success, last seen in a ” home” test win over the Aussies eight years ago.

With the series squared, and no batsman managing  a ton, Mohammad Abbas led the bowler in wickets and picked up a maiden man of the series award. He bodes well for the future especially on English wickets.Leicestershire will cherish him this season.

Reality has bitten back, but there ‘s plenty to learn from the loss here for the Greenshirts and some bright points  will be taken from the series particularly the discipline shown at Lord’s and the young guns determination to strive.Till then, the North remembers !
