The Happy Slam !

The Happy Slam !

One of the most anticipated spectacles in January in addition to other New year festivities Down Under is the beginning of the tennis season. It gears up in full flow quite early as the 1st grand slam of the year , The Australian Open. Not only it provides us with excellent weather conditions to watch the world ‘s best in the game early on in the year , but also caters for asia pacific to host an event and showcase some of the talent on that side of the world, away from the european and the american hubs.

Australia’s home Grand Slam singles deficit streak is another story. 1978 was the last year the host nation celebrated home singles success in the form of Christina O Neill. In 2016 , we bid farewell for one of their favourites Lleyton Hewitt, the 2001 US open &  2002 Wimbledon champion. As is customary, the world’s top men’s and women‘s players have had their 6 week end of season break and warmed up to start in style by help of practice tourneys in asia and the pacific rim region.

One of the unique aspects of this grand slam is the Plexicushion Prestige surface which plays a bit different to other hard courts. It is a blend of latex and rubber and has been  installed since 2008 . The main show piece matches take place under lights when the cooler temps prevail including the men s and women singles finals. The Rod Laver Arena has retractable roof so unlike the US open, there are no delays of a 3rd Monday to get a men’s champion crowned.

Speaking of champions , Roger Federer came  into Melbourne ranked world no 3 . He had successfully revitalised his career under the patronage of the  legendary Stefan Edberg , another 2 time winner of this event. Roger hasn’t won a slam since Wimbledon 2012. When he lost at the second round at Wimbledon 2013 to the Ukranian Sergei Stakhovsky and then later in the summer in the fourth round to Tommy Robredo in New York , many suggested he should hang his boots up. He did just the opposite. He won six  ATP events in 2015  defeating Novak Djokovic in Dubai , Cincinnati Masters finals  as well as the round robin of World Tour finals. Federer is in the twilight of his career and has won everything tennis has to offer. He owns 17 singles grand slams, 4 of them in Melbourne last winning in 2010 . He is a perennial  favourite across the globe with all the fans.

HS 1

Rafael Nadal, once a favourite on all surfaces  bowed out at the first hurdle to long time compatriot Fernando Verdasco in five sets.Verdasco produced some breathtaking shots reviving the match these two shared in 2009 quarters on the same surface. It was the year Nadal won his only Australian Open. Nadal has struggled in 2015 and whether he will recover from barrage of poor performances to have a shot at Paris this year remains to be seen.Certainly for many a time,2015 was his worst year as he went without a slam since 2005.

HS 2

Amongst the potential to upset the top 3 in 2016 was Milos Raonic. The Serbian born Canadian  reached the Aussie open 4th round  in 2011 as a qualifier and 2015 quarters. This year he went  a step better catching attention  when he upset the 2014 champion Stanislaw Wawrinka, the 4th seed in the last 16.The Swiss no. 2, from Saint-Barthelme, was cruising in the three previous rounds until being stunned in the five setter.Raonic himself had beaten Roger Federer in the Brisbane tuneup two weeks earlier and came into the Open in rich form. He was rewarded with a semi against another perennial finalist, Andy Murray. Andy was a bit too much for Milos over five sets  although the youngster led two sets to one at one point. An injury however to Milos meant Andy went into his 5th Aussie final.

Entering into this slam,Novak Djokovic was the running favourite.he was the reigning champion, World no 1, and having won 4 of the last 5 Aussie opens  on this particular surface. He seems to electrify the Rod Laver arena and was cruising until Giles Simon pushed him to five sets and 100 unforced errors in Round 4.Novak nevertheless kept his cool, and  progressed to the prized semifinal showdown with Roger. The semi with Roger was a final in  itself and the hype was unmatchable . Novak blitzed through the 1st 2 sets in under fifty minutes and was looking in the form of his life.Roger found a way back, as he usually does to force a 4th set . Novak ,however was hitting sublime winners back and forth with the Swiss not as sharp as in earlier rounds and it showed, as the Serb advanced in four sets.

The final was much softer then the two semis as Novak blew away Murray . The first set went the same way as the Federer semi , with Novak winning 6-1.The next two sets the Briton competed though not to same intensity as a finalist would have plus Novak had the mental confidence to strike gold again. He won in straight sets to claim his 6th Norman Brookes Challenge cup, tying Ross Emerson’s amateur record .

HS 4

Despite the one sided final, the Australian Open proved to have other highlights . A new women ‘s single’s champion was crowned. Angelique Kerber, a German won upsetting the Serena Williams defence in 3 tight sets. She became the 1st German since 1994 to win here when Steffi Graf won. That was 22 years ago.Ironically It was set up to be as Serena ‘s 22nd title, the number of singles titles Steffi  has.Andy ‘s younger brother Jamie won the doubles with Bruno Soares who teamed up with Elina Vesnina to win the mixed doubles as well.Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis kept their 2015 slam winning streak with women’s doubles trophy.

HS3What more can one ask with Grand Slam Tennis in the day and night, under closed roof or open air with attendances soaring watching some great quality viewing. Some of the greats like Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall attended the final. If the fortnight in Melbourne is taken as a prelude to what will happen in the year of 2016 in tennis , then we indeed can say that Australian Open in the words of Roger Federer himself,is indeed “The Happy Slam “.

Blue won’t be the colour for Jose !

In what has been a strange and unpredictable 1st half of the season, there could be fewer fluctuations and bizarreness in football noticed than the one at Stamford Bridge. Jose Mourinho hailed as the supreme leader of West London had the most miserable premier league seasons ever witnessed by a defending champion team’s manager. Yet , his oustre caused quite a few upset faces amongst the many neutrals who follow the sport. Arsene Wenger certainly wasn’t one of them.

JM 1

To say Chelsea’s defence  of the title anything mirrored that of a champion was a far outcry to begin with. A poor off season form meant losing the Community Shield to long time London rival Arsenal. Jose had  given his loser’s medals to the Wembley crowd as a sign of his displeasure. That failure just carried into the 1st game where Swansea challenged them. The famous Eva Carniero incident sparked Jose’s woes bright and early. Hazard being carried off the pitch left him with 9 players and he voiced his expression loud and clear on the medical team. He expelled Eva from the future bench appearances and she  ultimately left the post. The matter didn’t end there as Carniero pressed charges following her early departure form the club. Chelsea failed to put up a club defence on that row as well.Soon after Jose left. Roman Abramovich had more bills to pay in addition to Jose s salary deficits which he is bound to pay till the end of this season.

JM2

A loss at Etihad stadium to their title challengers, Manchester City in week 2 followed by a home loss to Crystal palace ended August on a poor note . The defence again being shocking at times. Further losses were to come. Away losses to Everton and  Southampton was a a result both teams taking the back four apart. Stoke knocked them out of the Capital One cup. Worse was to follow. At Upton Park,Jose was sent to the stand in the 2nd half following an earful to the referee at half time. That meant a ban from Britannia stadium 2 weeks later, a game they also lost which came as little surprise by then. Prior to that,Liverpool tore into Chelsea at the Bridge with a  3-1 pounding.

By mid December, the Blues had 9 defeats in 16 games.Enough was Enough. Bournemouth’s loss at home followed by the team of the season so far Leicester City meant the marching orders were in place for Jose. His failures were ominous. He had lost the dressing room who now had responded with a cry of their in sorts by performing poorly.Costa was the prime example.Hazard followed by not wanting to play having hurt himself during the  Leicester match.

jm 5

If the dressing room was an appalling place, there was not much to sing about on the field. Ivanovic had played the worst half season,on the back of  a huge 2014-15 campaign and was a prime candidate for the “worst player” of the squad on many an occasion.  The back 4 even with Terry in it was jittery at times.Zouma struggled. Fabregas was a shadow of a player he had been last year.Hazard didn’t worry the goal scoring charts,a plain duck was all that needed. Up front Diego Costa was found fouling opposition back line more at times than doing some scoring damage. Jose’s critics say he didn’t use the youngsters as much and doesn’t give them much of an opportunity.Oscar was recurrently kept off as was the case with Hazard to warm the bench. Thibaut Courtois’s injury didn’t help and the  off season purchase of a backup Asmir Begovic suffered deeply in goal.It still didn’t add up to how poor the showings were. Has the team aged that much in the off season or just self exploded ? Was it right to have 33 players on loan ?

JM 3

Jose is not new to sudden departures . He left 2007/08 season in a bit of a state when Chelsea drew to lowly Blackburn early on in week 6. His 3rd season in Inter and Real both ended with agony despite league successes. Nor does his absence is a denominator for future failures. Chelsea finished 2nd to champions Manchester United only on the last day of the season in 2008 after Jose poor start and runners up to champions league in the famous Moscow penalty shootout under Avram Grant.

Moving on, Jose’s expulsion meant a saviour had to come in. Roman depended on Guus Hiddink in 2009 following Felipe Scolari s demise to comfort the Blues to FA cup win over Everton. He lost only once then in league and so far the stretch is 7 league  games without a loss. Time will only tell whether he can salvage a top six spot for them.

As for Jose, much can’t be said of his future Premier League career. He has been longed for in Madrid camps who dismissed him with disdain following a league win in 2013. Real  who have employed Zidane for now as interim might have to roll the cheque book out in the summer if their woeful season continues. Manchester United might also be looking for a manager in summer and though the six page  “love letter” written might impress some at Old Trafford , the lack of the attacking style and nurturing youth , plus the fraction of the OT lobby who still don’t want him anywhere close to Carrington might have a lot to say when the decision is made.

A Matter of Time

A Matter of Time

5 years ago, they hated him like anything. Public enemy  No 1 of 3. The Greenshirts had been stained and cricketing world had shame upon it. A year ago, he was still an outcast. He still is in many circles back home a ‘persona non grata ‘.The ICC eased on his punishment with a much quicker return than his other two compatriots. He was back on the domestic circuit earlier in the year in the lower tier circuit of the domestic league. Pretty soon, he struck form  before an injury curtailed his further input.

The  individual in question is none other than Mohammad Amir. Given the green signal by PCB to resume domestic cricket,he shed some light on his progress with some quick spells in the domestic T20 played just before Pakistan toured Zimbabwe in September. What wasn’t on the line was the fact there would be any sort of hastened return to the national squad .He continued his form securing a slot with Sui Southern Gas Company Limited , a departmental team in the Quaid e Azam league in the revamped domestic season. Whilst the national team was in Gulf , he managed 34 wkts in 6 games .Next came BPL. Chittagong Vikings wanted him.He was drafted in and on day one of the league took 4/30.The key wicket was of Misbah ul Haq’s off stump , that too when it looked like as if the Pakistani skipper would take Rangpur to a  sensational chasing win from 23/4 .That of course did eventually happen but Amir ‘s wickets were televised and went viral on the web to be seen on a mass scale considering this was an international t20 league and not just cohort of domestic players playing.

So why is Amir back in the mix ?  Do Pakistan need him ? In the five years he s been out, hasn’t Pakistan got an attack which boasts talent pooling out ? Folks used to say,he should be banished because by 2015, Pakistan’s  ferocious attack will be such that Amir’s accolades will be memories as distant as Earth’s interval with Pluto. Umar Gul, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Talha, Mohammad Irfan, Sohail Khan, Rahat Ali all have had spells in the era when he’s not been present. Surely any one  of the named or even others who have thrived on the domestic scene can displace Aamir and join Wahab as a potential strike bowler . Surely, injuries won’t be an issue considering how few and far between Pakistan cricketing schedules lie.

Pakistan’s problem with bowling doesn’t lie in the old ball. It comes with the new one.Playing on bone hard surfaces, the dry  stadia of the Gulf where the ball does little  conventionally , there is a thin window that is available for the quicks. Mohammad Hafeez in 2012 often used to take the new cherry and use it to put in dents in the England top order especially the lefties. That’s a place where Amir can really be effective. He’s always taken early breakthroughs which is a work in progress by the current bowling unit.

In the 2010  England series before the fixing story was let loose, Amir had already been a lock for man of the  series  with his 6/84 in Lords still standing as a standout performance. The honours board today still has his name on display despite the off field issues. He had developed a strike partnership with his “partner in crime”, Mohammad Asif. Both were successful as well with conditions suiting them. Pakistan ‘s batting which has always been a major contributor in the team’s downfall in overseas series particularly  was a key factor again. Amir was applauded by all not the least by a teary Michael Holding at Lord’s. The series loss  was not as depressing as the loss of a more important prospect for the future . A left armer Pakistan had waited for since a certain lanky bowler in 1984 by the name of Wasim Akram had disappeared to the Dark side.

Amir’s current so called PCB drafted rehabilitation has everyone talking about him. And not all of them for the right reasons . Is it too early ? Is he gonna play fairly ? Has he learned his lesson ? How will the team members react ? Already, the “Professor ” Mohammad Hafeez has issues playing in the same unit as he has. That tells volumes about the dressing room debate alone. The last thing that was was warranted was this kind of  response although it  again is unsurprising. However if that’s what it takes, then a few heads might have to roll. Another World Cup is looming and Pakistan can do well without off field gimmicks for a change.

A huge factor in  Amir’s comeback will be determined by  psychological resilience. It is a concept best explained by the grounded theory  of Fletcher and Sarkar published in the journal, Psychology of Sport and Exercise (2012) which took into account experiences of 12 Olympic  medallists. It accounts for important factors such as focus, motivation, positivity, self confidence  and perceived social support. The perceived social support is in the form of friends, family and peers. This is an important factor as how Amir’s colleagues receive him will also determine at the senior level how much will he contribute further.

Judging from the recent Gulf series where the Greenshirts were heavily outplayed  by England in the limited  format leg of the tour, they would need a lot more for the World Cup and beyond than just getting back some of the missed talent and they  definitely could do more than the way some of the batsmen threw their wickets away  and ran between wickets. Amir ‘s comeback is a matter of time , it always has been even when the timeline of the ban began. Many had doubts, but in the land where age is now just a number, 23 might be just right for 2016. Enough of “Rehab”. Its time to play ball again .

Of Burgess , Vardy and the Final Four !

      Sam Burgess

They call him Slammin Sam. It doesn’t seem the world of Rugby Union especially  Bath will be jamming anytime soon  with the way things are running with Sam Burgess. As the print media in the Uk throws out ink about his high profile move back to Rugby League and South Sydney Rabbitohs in NRL shunning the purist culture in Bath , there are many Union lovers who would be critical of this act. Slammin Sam says his heart was always with Rugby league. Was it ?  He won the Churchill Medal for being man of the match in NRL final leading the Rabbitohs to their 1st title in 43 years.

sam 2

Switching codes to Bath rugby in late 2014 , he was selected for  Stuart Lancaster’s world cup squad  of 2015, amove that could be debated for many reasons let alone the playing style and place he occupied. The Hosts struggled and bowed out before the quarterfinals following defeats to Wales and Australia . Sam had an ambivalent role playing the inside centre slot which was highly debated in the circles leading up to the tournament.

The Dewsbury native decided not to continue with the Aviva Premiership season and go back to Sydney where his mum and brothers also reside. There’s no doubting his talent as Rugby League player  with skill, agility and talent.  This move was pleasing to his fans who followed his career as a Bradford Bull and later on as a Rabbitoh. The deal is lucrative  which itself could be reason enough but the  bottom line is he couldn’t adapt to Union  as some what have expected. Sonny Bill Williams will have to wait for England.

Jamie  Vardy

Non league football has produced many great names for top flight clubs over the years . John Barnes, Vinnie Jones, Stuart Pearce, Chris Waddle and more recently Charlie Austin have enjoyed premier league success coming from very humble beginnings. The latest in that series of success stories seems to be Sheffield born Jamie Vardy. Released in 2002 by Sheffield Wednesday as a junior to join Stocksbridge Park Steels in the Northern Premier League , the forward played for 4 seasons before subsequent moves to Halifax town and Fleetwood town. His big move came when Leicester made him a million pound buy from non league Fleetwood. That was a record itself. Leicester gained promotion in 2014 and Jamie prospered.

jamie 2

This season in particular,he has had a flying start scoring in nine consecutive premier league games , leaving him one behind  the record heading into 13th round of EPL games .Combined with Riyadh Mahrez , they form the top two rated footballers of the league. No wonder Leicester  find themselves 3rd in the table ahead of Manchester United , whose  former player Ruud Van Nistelrooy is the holder of the league scoring streak at 10. St James Park at the weekend is the place to be as the fast flicking forward fox tries to overcome a thigh injury  in a bid to overtake the record .

Jamie’s speed and skill as well as finish in the final 1/3rd has been one of the bright spots in the Premier league this fall.He is a breath of fresh air and much needed forwarding boost that Harry Kane provided last winter in his steep rise for Spurs. Nevertheless , the season has just been just 12 games old , so more challenges await for Leicester and Vardy in the winter.

Jamie will find good company in the League and England squad come next summer. Dele Alli who was playing in League One a year ago is one of them. Another is Ross Barkley who at one point struggled to make  Leeds United’s first team whilst on loan. Both started this week’s England friendly versus France. A combination for the future.

jamie 1

As for club he played as a junior,Sheffield Wednesday must be missing him now considering his form this season and  their recent quest for promotion to top flight football from the Championship. Hillsborough might just not be on his mind yet,as greener pastures await.

Final Four of Euro

Date, July 2016. The venue, Stade de France. The occasion, Euro 2016 finale. All looked a bit distant as the events in Paris overtook the sporting headlines between the recent France and Germany friendly. How ironic it might be if the two teams actually make it to that final in 8 months time.

As the race for European qualification climaxed  in the last week, Sport overcame the off field issues as it usually does , with qualifiers resuming and France playing a friendly at Wembley. Hungary produced a shocker beating Norway , whilst Ireland courtesy Jon Walters progressed past Bosnia at Dublin. Sweden won the Battle of Scandinavia as Zlatan Ibrahimovic the Paris St Germain forward  starred again scoring his 62nd international goal .

z i

The final spot was clinched by Ukraine who held to 1-1 draw with Andriy Yarmalenko’s strike. The Russian born forward  has 22 international goals in 55 appearances for Ukraine and 74 for Dynamo Kiev in 185 games and potential move to EPL might be in the offering for next summer.

There you have it. All 24 decided and set for France 2016 who host for the 1st time the event since winning at home soil in 1984. And if hosting is any way to go by, then 1998 is a much recent note for many at how well they do it. Just ask Zizou.

Seven Stunners of 2015 !

The thrills of  sporting shocks make each sport ever so interesting . North Korea did so in 1966 FIFA  World Cup, Kenya beating Windies in 1996  ICC World cup, the unknown Boris Becker winning Wimbledon in 1985  at the age of 17. These are seven of the famous ones that have shaped 2015 so far.

    The Ashes

Heading into the summer, Australia as world champions in the ODI format and defending a 5-0 whitewash of England from Down Under were overwhelming favourites to take the urn again . The tests were one sided depending on which team took the first two days. England strangled the Edgbaston and Trent bridge tests on the basis of moving wickets on opening days and and recurring  Aussie collapses. Joe Root had a remarkable series with the bat.

England  hung on to a 3-2 series win after the visitors won at the Oval  in Michael Clarke’s final ever test. In a stunning summer of test cricket , they  had regained the Ashes signposting  Nasser Hussain’s famous words ” Cook has his redemption!”

The Triple Crown of Horse Racing

Not since the Affirmed in 1979 as a thoroughbred horse won the  triple crown of horse racing. The Kentucky Derby, The Preakness and The Belmont stakes provide a 3 set series in early May to early June over 4 weeks that sets the thoroughbred season alight in USA.

This year American Pharoah, a colt owned by Ahmad Ziyat broke the 37 yr old jinx which many before in the last generation have failed to. The challenging Belmont Park often has confounded many horses in achieving the hat trick . For American Pharoah, it was a dream running the second fastest Belmont stakes to complete the crown. The colt became the 12 th horse to win the triple crown.

Interestingly , American Pharoah  won the ” grand slam” winning the Breeders Cup last month.

Stan Wawrinka beats Novak Djokovic in French Open Final

The only grand slam final lost by Novak this year . It sent the famous Paris crowd applauding the usually unemotional Serb into a moment of reflection at the end. Djokovic has totally dominated the year in tennis but Stan on the red clay on Paris provided a big shock on the day coming back from one set down to win in four.  It  was the 3rd time Djokovic lost in Paris.

He did win in the same city later on in the year , a record Masters tournament win  beating Andy Murray .

Bangladesh ‘s One Day Home stand

The shocks started in the world cup when the beat England but that wasnt a shock to England fans. A young Pakistan side toured in April and found the bitter end of a “Bangla wash ” losing 3-0  in the one dayers. In the ensuing series versus India, a 19 yr old left arm slingie called Mustafizur Rahman shot into stardom claiming 11 wkts in the first two games and rolling the home team to another unlikely series win.

Next up, South Africa. The Proteas won their opening game but lost the next two, Mustafizur playing a part in those wins as well. Bangladesh had qualified for the Champions trophy in 2017 in England by claiming the no 7 spot in ODI rankings.

They completed a fourth series win earlier this week with a comprehensive series win over Zimbabwe.

Women’s US Open :  Serena’s semi

The grand slam  event hyped to be the famous crowning of Serena Williams’ slam ended up being pear shaped as she bundled out of her home grand slam in the semi final to unheralded Roberta Vinci .Vinci came from one set down in the huge Arthur Ashe stadium and the partisan crowd to record one of the biggets wins of her career.

Roberta played the final against compatriot Flavia Panetta, a day later but lost to her dear tennis friend. Moments after lifting the trophy , Flavia announced her retirement from the sport.

Rugby Union World Cup : Japan beat South Africa

The Rugby world cup always posts some interesting results, this year’s World Cup in England was no different. Japan took on South Africa on 19th September at Brighton Community stadium in a group B match.

The last minute try in the 83rd minute was the biggest moment in Japanese rugby history for sure but also registered one of ,if not the biggest upsets ever in sport itself. It was only Japan’s second ever win in the world cup and ended a run of 18 straight defeats.

Michael Leitch & Goromaru had tries, Goromaru kicked 5 penalties  and a conversion. The winning try came form Karne Hasketh. Many tweeted comparing the upset to James Buster Douglas knocking out Mike Tyson in 1990.

Netherlands failed to qualify for Euro 2016

Known to be one of the most cheerful fans in the football, the Dutch will have little to cheer next summer in France as the national squad failed. Total football became ” total failure” as Robin van Persie scored an own goal in a 3-2 home defeat to Czech republic in a crucial final game in October.

Iceland had started their run of autumn losses with a 1-0 away win in Amsterdam. Turkey who had earlier in September beaten the Dutch 3-0 , qualified  as the highest 3rd place team in a tournament that sent the Bosphorus on fire . The Euro has been expanded to 24 teams from 16 in France next year which made it even more stunning for them to miss out.

Euro 2016

Tuk Tuk-tastic !

In October 2010, Pakistan’s cricketing fortunes plunged deep into darkness that can be only summed as the sporting version of a Black Hole. They had suffered a heavy 3-1 test series defeat on the field in England and off it had three players         ( Mohammad Aamir , Salman Butt , Mohammad Asif ) being banned for spot fixing charges. This on top of the fact they were forced to play cricket away from home following the Lahore debacle of 2009 with Sri Lankan team.It was not a good time to be a fan of the Cornered Tigers.

2010 south africa series

As the obvious change in the captaincy occurred, came a player who had not always been held in high regard in Pakistan’s cricketing circles . Misbah ul Haq Khan Niazi was infamous because of his 2007 World Cup T20 final at Johannesburg against India where he had played a scoop shot that had clinched defeat from a possible chance of a win. This was on his return to mainstream cricket after 4 years . On his second return in 2010, at 37, he was made in charge of a side who might have lost its bowling punchline a few months before the  2011 World Cup. They faced a formidable South African test squad and managed to hold them to two dull draws.

Misbah-ul-Haq-007

As he progressed in his captaincy, he became renowned for his slow batting after the fall of early wickets typical of a Pakistan top order performance. The famous 2011 World Cup semifinal at Mohali was another dark spot in his CV, with the loss again primarily blamed at his rate of run making. However he continued to take on the barrage of criticism, an offshoot of which was a nickname called Tuk Tuk . It meant slow tapping of the ball without any run accumulation. Despite that ,he managed a successful streak in tests . This culminated in a famous whitewash of 2012 in the Gulf against the Poms 3-0 which began to strengthen his cause. He went on to in lead to an Asia cup win the same year and later on to a victorious Indian ODI  tour.Things were looking a bit brighter for Tuk Tuk.

2012 series win

Although he lost 3-0 in South Africa , the return leg in the fall was drawn in the Gulf 1-1.12 months later he led a famous 2-0 drubbing of the Aussies . This was Pakistan s first test win since 1995 and eventually a series since 1988 against the Kangaroos . Misbah in the 2nd innings of the Abu Dhabi went into AB Devilliers mode  and clubbed the fastest test 100 in 56 balls, a record he tied with the legendary  Vivian Richards. This followed a first innings of 101. Misbah had tied the legendary skippers Imran Khan and Javed Miandad at 14 test wins. He went on to break that record on the same ground versus Kiwis following a third straight 100.

aus series

2015 might have signalled the end of his ODI career during the World Cup but his test wins continued. The Greenshirts won in Bangladesh at Mirpur where he hit 82. A few months later, they won a series against Sri Lanka at Pallekele , a 1st for 9 years. The winning runs were achieved in his stand with Younus Khan in a monumental run chase scoring 382.  As one of the most closest series played this year against England concluded with a 2-0 win at the historic Sharjah stadium which has been a site for their previous one day successes, Pakistan rose to No 2 in the rankings. He again had a match winning 102 at Dubai and innings saving 71 in the 1st inning of the final test at Sharjah .

yK

There was talk of retirement looming as the series against England began but now the PCB and most of his cricket fans possibly think otherwise considering the difficult tour of the UK expected next year to be anything but a walk in the park. It was a tightly contested series despite the end results with spin dominating. Misbah ended with 352 runs in the  series behind only to Mohammad Hafeez and the England skipper Alistair Cook.

cook

Forgiveness is hard to achieve in Pakistani cricketing folklore. Although played only 61 tests, he has taken a long and weary journey at the age of 41 to convince many that he can be remembered that what he did In the past didn’t reply reflect the player he is. It might be boring at times and he might not attract the best of crowds considering the kind of young stroke players around and in an era of T20 cricket , but he does play solidly and puts an enormous price to his wicket. And in a series which commended Younus Khan for becoming his team’s highest test runs scorer ever, Misbah now can rule the roost at 20 test captain wins, a record that will stay for some time.

Misbah 1

As a well groomed and a learned individual from Mianwali, he had an arduous task cleaning up that mess of 2010. His calmness and control prevailed. In five years and 42 tests at the helm, he finally managed to change the outlook of Pakistan cricket at test level, something many struggled to do before him.Maybe his future following cricket might be more forgiving than the path he took towards achieving this success.

The Derby : Did it really live up to the hype ?

The Derby : Did it really live up to the hype ?

Not only is it one of the oldest rivalries in association football but also one of the fiercest contested given the two clubs recent brushing with silverware. Seven of the last nine league titles have ended up in the city known as Cottonopolis. The only cotton now getting popular is from the shirts of the area’s two popular brands, City and United. It’s a footballing revolution instigated by City’s new found wealth from the Gulf mixed with the remnants of the legacy that Sir Alex Ferguson has been proudly manufactured over the last quarter century of his reign at Old Trafford.

Buildup

No irony then that a few miles from one of the world’s first industrial estate  of Trafford Park, was the venue that took centre stage in the marquee matchup  of the premiership season. Glory or not,the two clubs’ head to head games always guarantees goals , drama and controversy . Their last encounter of April 2015 in the Mancunian rain ended with a first derby win for Louis van Gaal . City had earlier won  the September encounter by a solitary goal, and have  had the recent upper hand winning six of last eight duels. 29 goals have been produced in such games . Such has been the dynamic nature of the contest that a draw hasn’t been achieved in last 12 games across all formats.

That was till Sunday. According to The Guardian’s James Richardson “It was the  worst apology since Tony Blair’s. ”  Football dreamt of quality of the premiership but it was not to be. The two teams had featured in the top 3 before the latest  round of  league matches . City had a lot of injuries and missed the services of their leading scorer, Sergio Aguero and their leading assists provider, David Silva. United had issues of a different note. Their main marksman , Wayne Rooney is under intense pressure for maintains his place in the squad after Anthony Martial’s dream start in the premiership . They also had to entail a 4,000 mile round trip to subzero Moscow mid week to play in the champions league.

The Game

The 1st 45 minutes were forgetful .I don’t know what half Gary Neville was watching  who was full of praises . United didn’t have a shot on goal and despite dictating possession lacked any pace and penetration which has become a theme for the games where they have failed this season. Louis van Gaal made a solitary change bringing on Juan Mata for Jesse Lingard from that Moscow squad to ignite that speed but the fatigued bodies had other notions. The best chances did fell to United in the second half when Lingard volleyed the bar post and Joe Hart saved from Chris Smalling who has arguably been the hosts’ premier player of the season.

derby 1

City missed their star figures badly, creativity wise .Yahya Toure ‘s and Vincent Kompany’s  impact on the game was also surprisingly minimal . Such was the quality that the highlight of the 1st half was Yahya’s aerial clash with Wayne Rooney which bloodied his head . In a game where expectations were higher than the nearby Chille Factore, the final score was as dull as the local weather . It ended goal less. Possibly a game which could have done without a man of the match which went to in the end to Morgan Schneiderlein .

Aftermath

The draw was enough for Manchester City to take top spot from overnight leaders Arsenal . United lost a place to the ever rising West Ham team to take 4th place on goal difference. The derby left a lot to be desired for both Mancunian camps and it just depicts how stretched the depth charts will be for the team challenging to take the crown come next May. Sterner challenges lie for Manuel Pellegrini and Louis Van Gaal in the season ahead but if it’s anything like this contest, they both have their work cut out.

5 reasons why Novak Djokovic is not a fan favourite !

5 reasons why Novak Djokovic is not a fan favourite !

When Benedict Cumberbatch hosted the Laureus Sportsman of the Year award earlier in May this year in Shanghai, the main category of the night was a close contest and at times debatable. It could have been argued that Novak Djokovic took the prize away luckily as he had only won Wimbledon in 2014. Marc Marquez and Lewis Hamilton had much more dominant years behind the wheels. Rory Mclroy had won two golfing majors in a calendar year which in itself is a quite an achievement.

There lies the question. Will Novak Djokovic make your fan favourite list or not ? Here are 5 reasons why he might miss the cut.

1. Federer will always be the fan favourite.

There is no doubt that Roger’s style is always been one that attracted the crowds. The finesse , the brand of tennis and the touch he displayed over the years and still continues to do so on the court has won plaudits all over the globe. His soft and often sentimental nature has been adored by many.Novak is much more direct and bold. In this aspects Novak has been from Roger’s league as one could imagine.

2. The Federer / Nadal Rivalry .

Roger and Rafa dominated the circuits from 2005 onwards in their own ways . Nadal s edge on their personal rivalry and Federer overall prowess in the grand slams made it an unmatchable duel in the previous decade.Who can forget the superb the 3 successive Wimbledon finals of 2006-2008 and the Australian open final of 2009.Simply breathtaking. If the rivalry was on court then their friendship off the court made it even more unique.

3. Failure to win the Grand Slam .

Its been a great year for Novak. He has reached every grand slam final and was one win away from claiming the French open in order to compete the career grand slam . That win could have also on reflection now be the difference between a calendar grand slam since Laver’s 1969 feat , the last male tennis player to complete the feat . His failure to win the French does pose questions for the purists . The French clay has disappointed many in the quest for a career grand slam. Just ask Boris , Stefan and  “Pistol” Pete.

4. Feigning the injury in the Australian Open Final .
Andy Murray fans won’t be impressed by what happened in Melbourne earlier this year. Andy had just tied the final by striking back and winning the second set. Early on in the 3rd set, Novak showed signs that the wasn’t 100 %. He was limping gingerly on the court as if stunned by the Murray onslaught. That however kind of backfired for Murray who didn’t know how to react as Novak bounced back like his usual self.

5. Funny Impersonations or Are they ?

There is a funny side indeed to Novak. He loves to impersonate. He has been labelled as a clown but he is quite good at it. Though providing great post match entertainment, sometimes he overdoes it. He has impersonated many of his compatriots including Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, John McEnroe and his coach Boris Becker.

Having said that, If Benedict has a chance to host a third straight Laureus event, based on 2015 alone, few would dispute Novak winning it again as he thoroughly dominated the year of tennis if not the fans.

The Shoaib Malik Comeback

26th September, 2009. Venue is Centurion Park. It’s a classic encounter in the ICC champions trophy between Pakistan and India. Pakistan’s  batting early were  reduced to  65 for 3, and on the crease were  two batsmen who weren’t  seeing an eye to an eye with each other. Mohammad Yousuf and Shoaib Malik’s careers were at crossroads at either sides  of a captaincy issue that will haunt them in various ways in the months to come.

Shoaib Malik & Mohammed Yousuf

Malik is already a deposed captain by 27 having led Pakistan to a final in the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup  against India only two years ago . He was also on the crease  when Pakistan knocked  the winning runs in the 2009 final at Lords, though much lesser of a hero than Shahid was. Yousuf on the other hand had been in and out due to  an ICL fiasco and then not being backed for the in fashion T20 format  something he blamed Shoaib for .

I didn’t want Malik to perform well this day as his legacy was much tainted post removal . Like many Pakistani captains who were removed , he was criticised forming his own league  within the team and wasn’t happy playing under Younus who was the T20 champion  skipper in the aftermath of a pretty impulsive removal. As  I fought against my own self , the band of  critics  and myself were  proven wrong .  He played an innings of calibre and as the runs piled , there was just no way one could have gone against him . Like he did  with his career later  , he somehow finds a way to come back .

Despite their cold  feud, Yousuf played his part in a solid run a ball stand that accounted for 206 runs which ends up with Malik playing one of the most memorable and match winning innings in his career, a 128.They were unstoppable that evening ,in a  typical warrior like mode. This was though a blip still , in how proceedings ended up in a phased loss of form for the Sialkot lad since that South African spring.

Many fans including  myself have always endured  a love hate relationship with  Malik over the years . The  career that seemed to blossom like a teenage sensation would typically in late 90 ‘s era for Pakistani cricketers . He started off in a Saqlain like off spin style. Being an agile fielder was a  bonus but  the the big plus was his explosive lower order batting . And bat he did. It wasn’t until April 2002 when he started actually opening the batting that he launched himself batting wise fully and  worked his way into test batting ranks as well.

It was a hot April afternoon and I remember being in Lahore , my friend was wanting to go watch live that game at  Gaddafi. He scored a 115 against the Black Caps on his ground debut which started a streak . It was a happy all round debut in which he got 3 wickets  as well. His Gaddafi luck never fizzled  . He would go on to score 3 100s and 8 fifties breaking the stadium record earlier this year in the series against Zimbabwe and in the process crossing 1,000 ground runs .

It always felt when Malik ascended to captaincy in 2007  as one of the younger graduates, there would be a longer tenure given. Instead  within a brief spell  of under 2 years , he was left out in the cold over a massive  Sri Lankan one day defeat ironically at Gaddafi as well. That series was the last played on Pakistani home soil. His cricketing accolades started to wane then .

In the test  series that followed ,he was part of  the infamous  Lahore  test in March 2009 against the Lankans , under Younus Khan s captaincy. The hosting  of International   cricket ended.  A future outside Pakistani turfs looked bleak. Malik’  s post Centurion Park  one day  achievements were thin  but did  include  a high profile marriage to Sania Mirza which didn’t add to his four hundreds against India though once again matches  were  few and far between. He was diminished slowly into the doldrums of domestic  T20 cricket where he has always maintained a prolific run , leading  Sialkot to numerous wins . He tried many comebacks internationally as a  result  but with limited success. I thought I had seen him off.

shoaib-malik-afp-670_0

Following a World Cup that concluded Misbah and Shahid ‘s careers and and embarrassing whitewash in Bangladesh , the batting line looked thin. the May 2015 home series had an aura of its own .The whole Zimbabwean  team is welcomed like superstars . The crowd propels the series into an event worth witnessing. The atmosphere was electric for all the five games hosted . I longed again to witness the Gaddafi but far way on English shores enjoyed my  family in Lahore witnessing the exhilarating atmosphere even in high burning  temperatures  . It was a  congregation the hosts and millions around the globe  really wanted , a series well received . Into the fray  comes a deposed member of the squad after two years into the one day squad who according to many had been given chance after chance and failed. So it is,  a veteran Shoaib pads up.

This time though , at one of his favoured tracks , he didn’t disappoint .Though he belted a  76 ball 112   and brought the roof down , it  wasn’t the same . 12 years earlier , he inflicted a Protean trauma  on the same pitch when he hammered  82 off 41 in a game changing lower order innings. Now that was one of his best rated Gaddafi innings to date . It tells you a thing or two about the strange cynicism that is always associated with Pakistani cricket .

Batting wise , the  technique might make the English and Aussies laugh all day . The dropped catches  will make South Africans and  Kiwis  giggle to no end . The inability to bat might make Indians dance all day in the field  . Sri Lankans will  also mimic  for lack of  consistency but one thing remains , the talent is exceptional . The more you stop the more it comes bouncing back and hits  right in the head . Wahab ,Azhar ,Haris , Sarfraz and Yasir are living proofs of these. The tap never runs dry.

And then there is Shoaib Malik, who now owns  2015 with a exact 100 average in Odis. Is it a change of  technique? Unlikely at 33. Is it the fact he is playing on dead wickets ?  But then the Sri Lankan wickets were no feather beds either . Is it CBT or psychotherapy as Pakistan now has a full time sports psychologist Dr .Maqsood Babri who has made his impact felt in recent time. Maybe.  Not surprisingly , Shoaib credits his success  to his wife . Ironically,   Sania herself has been finding  success on her sides  with grand slam doubles titles at Wimbledon and U.S. Open , pairing with Martina Hingis. I hope the party has just begun, with or without dubsmash.

Shoaib_Malik-1200

Malik’ s success lands him a test spot which is a bit of a surprise although sterner tests still await with a T20 World Cup year next March and a long English summer of 2016 which usually is one of the most difficult ” off the field ”  series that the Greenshirts  encounter.  For now , I am a silent observer abstaining from  any more weight thrown against his mammoth  numbers , my inner self though urging him on just like I did at Centurion all  those years back. I  just have to say what the whole of  Pakistan said to our African guests  in May , ” Jee Ayaan Noo ” ( welcome greeting in Punjabi )

Sports psychiatry : A New Horizon

In February 1989, Frank Bruno and Mike Tyson fought in Tokyo, in what was then billed as the biggest fight on the planet. Both were champions in their own respect , Tyson was the youngest boxing champion at the time and the most brutal thing the world has ever known  in the ring . Bruno who had a 32-2 record ,till that date lost that fight but went on to take the WBC heavyweight in 1995 title. Sadly for both, drugs and social circumstances became an issue and their careers ended   in controversy . Both fighters ultimately were diagnosed with bipolar disorder , a mental health disorder  with episodes of depression and manic states  requiring clinical management .
Sports and psychiatric issues stem deep. The pressure of performances in front of huge attendances, the pre – match anxiety ,  glorious wins and agonising defeats all are part and parcel of sport.  Mental health issues may not make the news until severe problems occur for example the recent cases  of  Marcus Trescothick and  Jonathan Trott which  became front and back page news.
Both have since described engaging with  support from mental health services .Unfortunately , some athletes aren’t so lucky and do not receive the kind of psychiatric support they probably require.

Sports psychiatry aims to address this issue and has been successful  helping various individuals  like snooker player Ronnie O Sullivan or  teams like British Olympic cycling team,  achieve success. Sports Psychiatrists employ a range of Pharmacological and Therapeutic strategies. As a pioneering example ,Dr Allan Johnston ,a Consultant Psychiatrist and UK Rugby League’s first  Sports Psychiatrist currently  with the Bradford Bulls describes the components of  his model:
There  are a number of important factors which have proven crucial to the success of the Sports Psychiatry model used at the Bradford Bulls RLFC. These can be summarised as:
1. Confidentiality
In Sports Psychiatry, confidentiality takes on an extra significance. The Sports Psychiatrist will likely work in a team of athletes, coaches, , managers and other support staff. The Sports Psychiatrist will often have a dual role of ensuring the wellbeing of the athlete and also enhancing their match day performance.. . A potential conflict of interest could arise where the athlete discloses a wellbeing issue which may impact on their individual performance, the performance of the team or their match selection. The Sports Psychiatrist should discuss in advance with the coaching team the importance of Confidentiality.
2. Clinical thresholds and Proactive engagement
The model developed by Dr Johnston at the Bradford Bulls RLFC has a proactive reach. An athletes focus is understandably on their own elite performance and they are often not well placed to assess when they need to access help with some notable exceptions such as the England Cricketer Jonathan Trott. In Dr Johnston’s Bradford Bulls model the players have open access to the wellbeing clinic which is located at the training ground alongside the players changing rooms. A weekly clinic occurs which players can self refer to in person, via telephone or SMS text message. The first hour of the clinic has an open access ‘drop in’ facility which the players often use for brief consultation. All players and staff can contact Dr Johnston in person or via Telephone, SMS  message, Email or Twitter. He is present each Friday at the training ground and at every match home and away, ensuring a high level of engagement.

3. Mental Health Stigma and Normalising the Psychiatrists role
The final factor essential to the success of the Sports Psychiatry role has been the ‘normalisation’ of sports psychiatry as a routine part of the players match preparation. The Friday routine of the Bradford Bulls players involves Physiotherapy, Massage, Gym, Well being support, indoor skills and field skills.  ‘Normalisation’ has been essential in de-stigmatising the role of the Sports Psychiatrist which has become just part of the Friday routine at the Bradford Bulls. Players can see Dr Johnston for well being issues, performance issues or any combination of the two. This, combined with strict confidentiality ensures that when a player requests a consultation this carries no stigma amongst his teammates and is frequently seen as a mark of professionalism in this demanding sport.

One measure of the success of this model is that 75% of all consultations with Dr Johnston have been requested by the players themselves with the remaining 25% a combination of requested by Dr Johnston, by the coaching staff or by a family member. This demonstrates the enthusiasm the players have for this key part of their match preparation both in terms of well being and elite performance.

Sports Psychiatry is a developing psychiatric field but as levels of competition increase in the world of sport, services will be required to ensure the mental well being in addition to physical  health of sportsmen.. If there is any doubt about its success, we only have to look back to the most decorated swimmer in history. Michael Phelps overcame childhood Attention deficit disorder to  win 22 Olympic medals, a living record.

Dr Allan Johnston is a consultant psychiatrist in Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation NHS trust who has  a special interest in sports psychiatry. Special thanks for his contribution .
